Where do you start when decluttering your closet?

The act of decluttering can feel daunting, but you can make the process much easier on yourself by gathering three large bags: one for donating, one for throwing away/upcycling, and one for relocating items

Start with one category at a time. This way, you will be able to quickly identify which pieces of clothing should stay or go without disrupting the flow of decluttering. When in doubt, trust your gut - if it doesn't bring a smile to your face or serve any purpose anymore in your current lifestyle, then into the donation bag it goes!

With this method in hand, decluttering your closet will prove to be less like a chore and much more manageable.

Questions to ask yourself as you're decluttering your closet

As you’re going through your closet and deciding what to hang onto and what to let go of, there are some questions you can ask yourself:

  • Do I love it?
  • Does it fit my body today?
  • Is this worth taking up the valuable hanger space it's taking up?

For more questions like this, check out our free prompt guide filled with questions to ask yourself when decluttering your closet here

When you do a deep closet declutter, it’s not just about space; it’s about evaluating each piece of clothing from the standpoint of whether or not it is still serving you. If the item brings you pure joy when you look at it, or if it fits your current lifestyle in terms of how you move physically, give it a thumbs up. Anything that doesn’t hit those high standards should be tossed so that you can start filling your space with garments that bring positivity into your life, that you can wear every day, and that make you feel like the best version of yourself.

Where can I donate gently used clothing in Toronto?

Donating gently used clothing is a great way to give back to charity and help those less fortunate.

In Toronto, many charity organizations gladly accept donations of clothing items in good condition, such as Goodwill Canada, the Salvation Army and St. Vincent De Paul.

By donating items, you no longer use or need, you can play an important role in helping those in need while clearing your closet space at the same time!

Now that you have more space, it's time to organize what's left.

How to organize your closet

Organizing your closet is one of the most rewarding (and therapeutic) activities.

To start, make sure that everything in your closet has its own place.

Use baskets to organize items by categories, like sweaters, jeans, and scarves.

Matching hangers also add uniformity, so it looks more aesthetically pleasing and makes it easier to keep things organized. Adding labels to baskets or shelves can act as a quick visual cue for where items should be stored, which makes the chore much simpler in the future.

You will thank future you for taking the time to tackle this daunting task, especially when looking for an outfit in a hurry!
